KO Devs Recap – Sept Update preview

KO Devs Recap – Sept Update preview

The KO Devs event last Friday on Discord gave the community a sneak peek at the upcoming Drive Cam going live in our September update currently tracking for the second half of September. Here’s a recap on some of the items that creative director Mike Young shed some light on.

An Early Look on a New Way to Play

Drive Cam

  • This new POV doesn’t replace the current default camera, but gives players an additional POV option to see further down the court and see the whole floor in a more modern in-game feel, which will enable players to get fastbreaks started early and improve ball movement with teammates from end to end (makes passing better!)

  • Two different Drive Cam variants to give players choice:
    • Drive Cam is where the camera will always be behind your back even on defense
    • Drive Cam Flip will be set where the camera will be behind your back on offense, but on defense it’ll be facing your face with the backboard behind you

  • We’re taking away Action Cam, so NBA THE RUN will now have the Default, High, Drive Cam and Drive Flip Cam

  • We’re looking forward to your feedback once it’s live and if you think Drive Cam has the potential to be the new default cam at some point

What’s Coming / GamePlay

Goaltending

  • We’ve nerfed this on every single update including the beta and we’re significantly nerfing it in the September update

  • Best of the best are just too good at it, even with the lower-rated block characters that shouldn’t be doing it like Bobbito

  • For these past two weeks, our dev team has struggled getting goaltends. It’s still possible but it’s much harder even with taller players

Driving Layups

  • We’re adding flair to layups but also working on them to be blockable

Standing Dunks

  • More dunk animations that will vary based on your player

New Moves

  • Players can now bounce the ball off the ground towards the backboard for stylish plays and momentum-shifting alley-oops
  • Advanced Off-the-Heezay that can now knock your opponent down
  • Player can also repeat Off-the-Heezays so that you can perform the move to someone over and over again if you’re feeling extra flashy

Oop City Ruleset Changes

  • We’ve heard feedback that it’s one of the most frustrating game modes because it can be a really quick game
  • Changing ruleset to 2s and 3s, first to 23 and 4 points for Alley-Oops

Separating Style Moves per character

  • Although some players have unique style dribble moves, we’re making changes so that players without elite handles like El Gigante won’t be doing slip ‘n slide moves and will more realistically do more basic/simple moves instead
  • Showstopper style moves will be now be performed only by the best of the best handlers in the game

What’s Next

We’re packing as much as we can into this massive update ahead of its release in the back half of September. 5 NBA Legends – all Hall of Famers – are coming to make a case for a spot in your starting lineup, each bringing unique moves that makes them incredibly fun to play. We’re also making significant tweaks to shoves to make them more balanced and enjoyable.

Add in things like the new Championship Belts, a new court in Dyckman, fresh Shop items, and new original music tracks that we’ll share more on soon, and we can’t wait to kick off our first season.

Also… keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming community vote on a future ruleset suggested by you. Stay ready and we’ll see you at the next KO Devs event!
